"Our Special Spaces"

Youth Council member Esperanza Salas is coordinating a native species planting to create a pollinator habitat. The event will take place Saturday June 4th from 10-12pm. It will be held at 150 Victoria St E, Whitby, ON L1N 9L8 behind St. John's community garden.

Background:  Ontario Nature’s Youth Council is currently planning the sixth annual Our Special Spaces event. The event started in 2011 based on the Youth Council’s desire to engage communities across the province in a one-of-a-kind concurrent conservation volunteering event. Several dozen very successful ‘Our Special Spaces’ events have been held by Youth Council members in partnership with local naturalist groups since 2011. These events on average have had 250 volunteers each year.

Theme: “Our Special Spaces” – The Youth Council aims to work alongside a local naturalist club or environmental group to identify a ‘special space’ in the community in need of some kind of restoration or conservation activity. For 2016 we would like to focus on creating pollinator habitats through native wildflower and shrub plantings in communities across Ontario.
