Join us on another scenic tour through beautiful gardens, local farms and vibrant communities from Durham West through to Mid-North Durham.
Support local! Grow community! Learn! Have fun! And encounter food security in action!
Beginning in West Durham this fourteenth Tour we will be warmly welcomed by Valley Plentiful Community Garden whose 30 years of growing fresh produce together is a testimony to the strength of community. The garden houses over 100 plots for growing and an orchard. A green oasis neatly tucked under a main hydro corridor in the city of Pickering.
Winding our way north participants will be enveloped by the sanctuary that surrounds as you enter the Whitby Ajax Garden Project. Celebrating 25 years of growing together in family plots while providing fresh produce to local food banks. An amazing 10,000 pounds worth recorded in the last 10 years. Melanie Chandler from Southside Storehouse Community Food Bank Ajax will share the impact these donations in the community.
After wandering through the garden project itself we will jump in our vehicles and slip a short distance up the Lakeridge Rd to Hy-Hope Farm, a local treasure. The Farm Manager will introduce us to the some interesting farm features and release us to a shopping experience in the farm market and bakery. We will end our time here with a tasty Hy-Hope lunch and Saturday’s live music feature.
Stomachs satisfied we will meander through the Durham countryside to Seagrave where will discover its hidden treasure, Lavender-Blu. This small multi-faceted, eco family farm offer fields of lavender, artisanal lavender products, and option to PYO bouquet. Owner Ludmila Haynos–Owen will share the garden’s journey with us.
A short distance away we come across Care & Share Community Permaculture Garden located in a secluded corner of the historic Port Perry Fairgrounds. Learn about this unique garden, its expansion and its harmony with nature. Meet native plant expert Sayeh Beheshti for an experience you will remember ending with your own plant takeaway.
Prizes for the top three poker hands – a one hundred dollar Home Hardware gift card first prize.
A detailed itinerary with stop order and location coordinates will be emailed to all registered participants shortly before the tour date. Carpooling is encouraged, as this is a self-driving tour.
